Learning
how to use light - the easy way
Gaining total control over artificial studio lighting is
the biggest problem any photographer will ever face. Studio photography
professionals spend small (and in some cases large) fortunes buying the
right lighting equipment and the rest of their lives learning how to
use that equipment. And sometimes it seems that with every new job,
there comes a new learning curve. Lighting problems are probably the
number one reason why most middle aged photographers are bald. Their
hair did not recede over time, they literally ripped it out in large
chunks.
The biggest mistake that most amateur photographers make when they get
the studio lighting bug, is they buy a book on lighting and try to
recreate the three, four, and five light set-ups that are illustrated
in these books. Yes of course, photographers use multiple lights and I
have personally used more than a dozen lights to illuminate a scene,
but you should only do this after you have mastered the basics.
The most basic lighting set-up is one light, the second most basic is
one light and a reflector. In the good old days when I was working as a
young assistant at Playboy Studios West, we often used a soft light
made out of two hinged (with gaffers tape) 4x8 foot foamcore panels set
up as a large standing wedge, with a light (or two) inside and
diffusion material covering the open side. For reflectors we would use
additional foamcore panels.
Lowel has, in a stroke of genius, taken this same concept, shrunk it
down to table-top size, added some flourescent lights and packaged the
results as the Lowel Ego digital imaging light. And to sweeten the
package they have also developed a small desktop background sweep,
including a supply of colored background paper to fit. At a price of
$125.00 for the Lowel Ego and $25.00 for the Ego-sweep, it is really a
no brainer for anyone who needs to produce clean images of small
objects for either digital photography or dv video
productions.
