Turning the new low
cost Nikon D40 Digital
SLR into a powerful one lens, wide angle to telephoto, 11x super-zoom
camera. |
Why the US$ 599 Nikon D40 Digital SLR will
be my next
camera purchase.
It has the right amount of
manual
controls for creative work, plus the size, weight and price that makes
it an irresistible camera to own and use.
|
The Nikon
D80 Digital SLR
camera is aimed at aspiring photographers
With
a full feature set including a 10 megapixel CCD, borrowed from the
Nikon D200, yet retaining the simplicity and ease of use of the lower
end Nikon DSLRs.
|
The Nikon D200 DSLR is
still my choice for the best Pro-Am Digital SLR
camera.
The D200 has the look and feel of a professional camera, but it is
scaled down enough in size and weight to make it easier to handle for
every day use.

Nikon
releases a middle of the road winner,
the 10.2 million pixel Nikon D80 Digital SLR.
Targeted in
between the Nikon D70s and the Nikon D200 in price, the new Nikon D80
(camera body only) sells for just under one thousand dollars in the US.

Nikon D3
The Nikon
D3 DSLR - Nikon finally goes full frame.
Just like with the new Nikon
D300, I can't say much about this camera
yet because it is not available
until November (2007). The obvious advantage of this camera is that it
is full frame format so lenses will once again perform just the same as
when you were using 35mm film SLRs, other advantages are larger sensor
sites for the same resolution than DX format SLRs which should give
better performance in relation to dynamic range and high ISO
noise. If I do manage to get my hands on the Nikon D3 before
November, I will write a full report. In the mean time here are the
main features and specifications. Time to start drooling and saving
your pennies (better make that some large denomination bills).

Nikon D300
The Nikon
D300 DSLR is now my choice for the best Pro-Am Digital SLR
camera.
I can't say much about this camera yet because it is not available
until November (2007), but I have used the Nikon D200 for several years
and the improvements are significant. Resolution wise it is only a few
million pixels from 10 to 12 million pixels but the improvements in
auto focusing, exposure metering, size of viewfinder, live view on the
LCD, etc., etc. are so significant that any initial problems with the
camera (if there are any) will be well worth it. |

Nikon
D40
Why I think this a really hot camera and why I intend to buy one for
myself as soon as they become available. (I did buy one and it is now
my favorite lightweight take anywhere camera)
Nikon themselves are targeting
compact digital camera users for the D40
DSLR. They would like these compact camera users to move up to the
Nikon D40 DSLR so that for one, they can take better pictures in
situations that the compact cameras do not handle so well. And they
would also like to introduce the compact camera users to the world of
interchangeable lenses and off-camera flash units.

Nikon
D80
A lot of photographers are going to have a hard time deciding between
this camera and the D200.
The
typical Nikon D80 customer would be one who already owns a Nikon D50 or
D70 (or maybe even a low end Canon DSLR) and is starting to get serious
about his photography. He wants to buy into some expensive lenses (I
don't like the new term glass) but feels funny about putting thousands
of dollars worth of lenses on a "low end" camera. He also wants his
photographer friends to know that he is getting serious, so he has to
buy up to make the next step. The question is, should he spend roughly
a thousand dollars on a Nikon D80, or roughly one and a half thousand
dollars on a Nikon D200. Article

Nikon D2Hs
Designed for photojournalists and sports/action photographers, D2Hs
integrates the best technologies from its predecessors with an array of
exclusive new innovations that deliver the speed, response and handling
required for action photography.
The range of new features and enhancements in the D2Hs are based on
extensive research and feedback from professional photographers around
the world. An all-new image processing engine in the camera
produces images with higher quality, finer gradations and lower noise,
while a newly refined exposure metering system improves on Nikon's
hallmark 3D Color Matrix technology. The D2Hs Auto White Balance
and auto focusing systems have been fine tuned to deliver precise,
accurate results and an enhanced buffer now offers continuous shooting
at 8 frames per second for up to 50 consecutive shots (JPEG, FINE).

|
Nikon D2X
Designed as a truly versatile
workhorse
camera for many professional disciplines, the D2X blends for the first
time the high levels of resolution commercial clients demand with
superb image quality, color consistency and class-leading speed. The
D2X delivers high image quality using brand new innovations that
produce ultra sharp images with very fine gradations and smooth color
transitions across the color range -- all while maintaining impeccable
color accuracy, even when shooting under rapidly changing light.
High resolution is achieved by an all-new 12.4 million pixel DX Format
CMOS image sensor and a new image processing engine that works
seamlessly with optimized systems throughout the camera. Even
with this tremendous resolution, the D2X can comfortably shoot full
resolution images at 5 frames per second (up to 21 consecutive JPEGS
and 15 NEFs). When the situation demands yet faster frame rates,
the D2X has a unique 6.8 megapixel 'High Speed Cropped Image' mode that
boosts the shooting rate to 8 frames per second, up to 35 consecutive
JPEGs or 26 NEF images, by cropping the number of pixels used on the
sensor to create the image.

Nikon
D100
George Mann
Review
This is many ways the ideal camera for advanced photographic amateurs
and budget minded professionals. Also the ideal back-up camera for
professionals using the high end D1x. The Nikon D100 is a 6 million
pixel digital single lens reflex which uses the entire range of Nikon
single lens refex lenses. Recent price reductions have brought the cost
of the body down to a little over US$ 1,500.
